I have a '92 XLT, 120,000 miles. When I start driving in the morning the transmission doesn't shift right away, I usually have to drive about an 1/8-1/4 mile until it shifts out of first. After this initial shift, it works fine. I had the transmision flushed and new filter 1 year ago. I am beginning to think it is not the tranny, anyone run into this? Thanks
I'm sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but our '93 was doing this same thing 3 months ago. Just a warning, the longer you drive it like that, the more it costs to fix it. Our was in terrible shape when we had it rebuilt. Good luck. Oh! Our was drivable in 1st gear until it warmed for about 5 minutes, then it was fine, but we had no OD.
There are two shifting problems that you can have. First is at this age some of the vacuum modulators leak. There is a tiny orifice in the VM which is supposed to restrict the air. With fluid instead, it becomes sluggish when cold. Have you noticed small losses of fluid? Check the vacuum line at the vacuum tree for traces of fluid. Used to detect load on engine and controls most shifting.
Seond, and more likely, is the speed governor is sticking. This is located in the extension housing between the transmission and transfer case and prevents shifting till the vehicle is actualy up to speed. Only used in the 1>2 shift. This isn't a hard job to do and requires only polishing up the valve wirh some light sandpaper.
