Bought a '87 E350 Cheap. Would turn over but would not start. Found that oil pump had seized and broke the roll pin on the distributor shaft gear. Replaced Oil pump, distributor, rotor cap, distributor cap, ignition control module, plugs, plug wires, fuel pump and carburetor. Still will not start. I have the covers off the timing chain and it does not look like it has jumped but I am in this far might as well replace it any way. Seems to be getting spark and fuel. Any suggestions???? Oh by the way the motor is a 351M out of a 76 LTD...
no, you have to be at TDC between the compression and power strokes. it is possible to be at TDC between the exhaust and intake strokes also, but the engine won't run if the spark plug fires during valve overlap. easy way to make sure you are in the right place is to pull the #1 plug and put your finger to the plug hole. trip the solenoid with a screwdriver and when the air blows out the #1 plug hole you are on the top of the compression stroke when the timing marks indicate TDC. don't forget to account for the rotation of the dizzy drive gear when dropping the dizzy in. if the dizzy sits on top of the oil pump driveshaft, trip(just a bump) the solenoid again and the dizzy will drop. rotate engine around again to verify rotor position. takes about a minute after you are familiar with the drill.
"trip the solenoid with a screwdriver and when the air blows out the #1 plug hole you are on the top of the compression stroke when the timing marks indicate TDC." - what soleniod are you refering to?
by "dizzy", you mean the shaft that fits into the female end of the oil pump and the female end of the distributor which allows the oil pump to send oil throughout the engine when the distributor rotates, correct?
honestly, this is my first rebuild and i'm still learning.
the solenoid i am refering to is the starter solenoid, prolly on the passenger side inner fender where the + battery cable goes to. if you touch the battery terminal to the small "S" terminal with a screwdriver the engine will crank. make sure the key is "off" if you don't want the engine to start. if the key is "on" you can start the engine from under the hood. you can also connect a remote starter button to the same terminals, but the screwdriver is cheaper. "dizzy" is short for distributor, kinda fits cuz it just goes round and round! the shaft you mentioned is the oil pump driveshaft, it fits into the bottom of the dizzy. most of the time when you drop in the dizzy, it sits on top of the oil pump driveshaft and will not drop in all the way. a slight bump of the solenoid will cause the dizzy to drop in and engage the oil pump driveshaft. no problem, ask all the Q's you want!
