Still, leaves us with the WHERE IS IT problem tho!
Well Im looking at it and it really could be anywhere in the center console.. its definitely not clear but shows after connector 396 and before connector 394, both of which are in the center console and the circuit wire is Black with pink tracer. Its gotta be in there somewhere..
C395 plugs into the vcp
C960 plugs into the video monitor
C394 is between these two
C396 is upstream of both, between 395, 960 and 396 is the elusive 4 amp fuse.
That makes sense to me!!! I check them out tomorrow morning, multi-meter in hand. Hopefully, the fuse (if I can locate it) is the problem. Thanks very much to you two for all your help. I'll get back to ya!
If you ran your hand up as far as you could reach from the VCP unit and didnt find it, you may find it up under the front half of the console assembly. It has two 20 torx screws holding it down, one at the rear under the console lid and one under the rubber pad for the forward storage section. Once you get those out the top section of the console should pop out from its retainer clips. You may find the fuse in that area. Of course Ford has been known to hide stuff to where you have to completely remove the console to get to it.
Its seems like I recall having to hunt down this fuse once a couple years ago, but when you hit about 50 yres old you have as much difficulty remembering yesterday as you do any other time.. LOL
Good luck.

Yes!!! The fuse was in the headliner - a lot closer to the roof-mounted video screen than it was to the VCP. The new fuse powered-up the VCP and the overhead video screen. However, the VCP would suck-up and spit-out the VHS tape, but it would NOT play/FF or Rewind. The local audio shop that my Ford dealer supposedly uses diagnosed a partially shorted circuit board, and recommended a re-furbished replacement. I can believe that knowing the path the errant remote followed on the way out!!! The unit arrived this morning, I mounted it, plugged it in and fired it up. Everything works fine. Cost was $170 for a re-furb'd VCP and a small diagnostic fee; I did the labor. The spring tension on the VCP's door is extremely weak; I'll have to be very careful in the future about loose items around it when the console lid is up. There should be more safeguards (other than a warning label) with a vertically loaded VCP. Ford probably feels that limited space precludes a side-fed tape machine. Thanks again for all your guidance and help.
Glad to hear you're up and running, I wish somebody had put that headliner location for the fuse holder in the books. You can bet I'll add that info to my books!
Mine was about 9"-12" forward of the roof-mounted LCD monitor. But, if what the Ford dealer told me was true, Ford does NOT install these VCP/LCD monitors at the factory. They are supposedly sub-contracted to a supplier/installer before the vehicles are shipped to any dealerships. The point is that the 4-amp in-line fuse can be installed ANYWHERE between the center console and the roof-mounted LCD unit. Perhaps there's no standard process among the various (if there are more than one) sub-conractors. Please don't take this response as gospel; I'm only telling you what was told to me. Good luck with your repairs.
