Help with '02 Expy VCP problem?
Help with '02 Expy VCP problem?
Hello all. I'm new to your forum and the owner of a new (new to ME, anyway) '02 Expedition XLT. My girlfriend's son dropped the VCP remote into the VCP. Rather than fish around inside the VCP to retrieve it, I unscrewed the VCP/6-disc CD combo and unplugged both of the electrical connections. I tipped the VCP on it's side and then completely upside down. Sure the remote came out, but took the path of a slow moving pin-ball. Upon re-assembly, the factory VCP and the factory overhead LCD will NOT power up. BTW, the CD player portion of the combo works fine. The owner's manual doesn't address the VCP and the rear entertainment system manual only suggests notifying the dealer if the unit(s) won't power up. One dealer says it's probably a fuse in the fuse box, but I could't find an applicable fuse in the lower driver-side fuse-box nor in the high-current fuse box under the hood. Another dealer says there's a fuse "within the center console" where the VCP/CD combo are located. I looked and couldn't find it. Any experience out there? Is there a fuse and, if so, where? Did maybe the bouncing remote fry a circuit board in the VCP? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the quick response, canuk. I fished around the bottom of that center console as much as I could and couldn't see/feel anything like an in-line fuse. Since I'm still getting to know this vehicle (and don't want to break anything else!!!!), I'm reluctant to dis-assemble a bunch of plastic and search any deeper.
Hello, "Fordtech 1". Thanks for the reply. The *8 5-amp fuse under the dash checks out OK; I even switched that 5-amp with another 5-amp fuse thinking that maybe I couldn't see the burnout. Still no power to VCP. I checked out behind the connector to the VCP: it's wrapped in elec. tape, but there's a "lump" in the taped wires about 2" or so behind the connector. Is that lump the inline fuse to which you refer? I'll wait to hear from you before I attack it with a razor blade. As you can tell, I'm not an electrical/electronics guy. Thanks again.
No joy!!! The "lump" in the tape only covered lumps of electrical tape covering pairs of wires. Not a very professional job in my opinion; sloppy previous owner, sloppy out-sourcing by Ford or sloppy Ford. If nothing else, I made it look a little better. Thanks for the help; if you can up with anything else, let me know.

If it is still under warranty best take it to the dealer before it gets injured any further. Fuse 8 provides the power so if its good and you get no powerup the unit is likely bad. Since the display and unit work together the display probably wont light up if the VCR is not able to power up.
Hello "homer...". Thanks for the input. I have an appointment on Tuesday with an electronics repair shop to whom the local Ford dealer farms-out audio/video/electronic work. I was hoping I could get a quick fix at this forum, especially locating the elusive 4-amp in-line fuse. I'll prepare a little write-up of my exploits so far. Thanks again.

Im still using an old original DVD 96-2003.
Should have gone to PTS and looked for a revised one. Sigh...
