My '03 Explorer w/ 4.0 V6 and 3.73 LS rear axle has a loud humming noise when accelerating at higway speeds between 50-55mph then above 55 it goes away. The noise gets worse the longer the vehicle runs. I've seen this problem alluded to in other posts about vibrations (luckily, I don't have this problem yet), and I was wondering if anyone knew if Ford came up for a fix. I don't have access to the TSB's (used to have Alldata, but the 03 info isn't available yet).
i have an 02 explorer and i have the same whining noise, its only between those speeds...i will list the TSB's that i will bring with me to Ford. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the help, I had the dealer check it out and they tell me that according to the TSB they need to replace the rear axle. So now I'm waiting for the parts to come in. Do you know where I can get access to the full TSBs that you listed? AllData doesn't have the '03 info posted yet
do you know which TSB they are using??? It would make it easier for me to bring the one that they use in with me, hopefully my service department will be as helpful as yours.
I'm sorry, I was looking for access to the full text of each TSB, the link only provides a summary, I'll let you know which TSB my dealer is referring to when I get the service done, I'm still waiting to hear from them (waiting for parts)
I have an 02 Explorer that recently developed a definite whine in the rear end (increasing in frequency with speed). It was particlularly noticeable between 30 and say 45 MPH. Above that I think road and wind noise started to dominate. The Ford dealer diagnosed and replaced several bearings in the rear end. The vehicle was under a used car warranty which paid for all but a $100 dedictible (after a BIG hassle of course). The bill was over $700. It seems this may be a design or parts quality deficiency in these vehicles.
Mine, a '98 4x4, started to whine at about 45 or 50K. I waited until it was loud enough for them to hear at 10MPH. Fixed under Extended warranty, $100 deductible. Free rental car. Between this and the tranny, and few other items, the 1600 for the warranty was worth it. (trannys are $2600 or so....)
This from the rough, tough 8.8 limited slip under this rough tough suv.
They never said anything about a TSB. This is what is going to get me out of a Ford--before, they would go over the car and do anything and everything--got the head gaskets done when I went in for an oil change on a 3.8. Now they are just like GM. Hope you don't notice till the warranty is out.
