This is my first 6-speed, should I be starting of in 2nd gear if not towing or empty load? I know the first gear is lower than the 5-speeds, but wasn't sure what was recommended.
You can start off in any gear you like.... I never use L except whith a trailer. Normally I start in 1 unless I'm rolling a little bit (like through a stoplight) or at least on level ground, then I'll use 2 (which is actually third gear of course).
The gear ratio's are actually pretty close between the ZF-5 and ZF-6, we just have an extra one splitting the middle gears.
I like to think of it as a true five speed with a granny low. The L (low) is really your first gear. So the 1 on the stick is really second gear, 2 is third, etc, etc. I almost always start out in 1 (which technically is second). If I have a load, on a hill, or if I'm tryin to save my clutch, I'll use L. I also found out that after time, the shift from L to 1 gets easier. Does that help you out at all?

Whenever I drive one, I start out in second (1 on the ****) about 90% of the time. The only time I don't is when I'm stopped going up a steep hill and need that extra power to get up it. AS far as a "rolling stop", you might be able to get away with leaving it in third (2). Just my experiences. I test drove another one yesterday and fell in love with it, even more than the one I was ABOUT to buy. Hope this helps.
