3 speed tranny

I have a 77' ford F100 with a 300 6 cyl. At present it has a c4 tranny. However it used to have a 3speed. What 3 speed did it have? Why would someone take it out? And how can I go about finding another one? The clutch pedal is still in cab. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely it had the 3.03 Fully Synchronized 3 Speed Transmission. One possible reason someone might have put an automatic is that the mechanical linkage for these were harder to push in than most so on long drives you end up with a tired left leg so if the tranny went bad maybe they figured they might as well put in an automatic. One these trannies shouldn't be hard to find in a junk yard.

The Ford 3.03 comes up on E-bay all the time. They are easy to find at the salvage yard - about $100 to $150.
