If this happens when you are standing still, dead stopped, NO it is not normal. It is a sign of one of 3 things, either you need to adjust your clutch, you get ready to replace it, or you have a lot of wear or are using incorrect fluid in your trans, so your thrust washers are not braking (as in slowing down) your cluster gear rotation speeds.
If you do not come to a dead stop then YES, it will grind & clash, but be aware that it is eating up gear teeth edges everytime it does. So again it is not "normal" it is damaging your transmission.
Getting 65 / later 3 Speed Manual, column shift, trans solves 1st gear clashing as it has a Syncro in 1st gear where 64s do not. No trans have syncros for reverse however. . . . .
Those 3 speeds that FBP is talking about (65-66) are a dime dozen too. Alot of folks upgrading to C6 auto or even better, toploaders. Worse case scenario is to lose that tranny and go with synchonized 3 speed.
The one i had in my 66 did the same thing. Clutched it and that didnt take care of problem. Ended up being the cluster shaft was bad.
Someone also told me that it could also be the shift tube but never checked due to i converted to auto.
No versions of FoMoCo 3 spd manual col shift had a syncro 1st until 1965 prooduction run. Then after that all of them did/do.
I don't believe any FoMoCo 3 spd manual has a syncro Reverse.
There is no room to put one in the case, and R runs off an idler in opposite rotation too. Syncronizing toothed gears spinning in two opposite directions is a bit beyond current technology, syncro or otherwise. . . . .Doncha' think?
Now I've gotten A/Ts into "R" at hiway speeds a time or two, an it has no syncro!............. Yeehah
Actually it's a remedy for a problem with an A/T, not just an idiot fooling around.
