I have a late 1994 PSD with turbo. Pulling a 22Ft Camper. Speed is 55 to 60 Mph in 4th gear at about 2200 Rpm. In the first 650Km about 400 Miles or so it consumer a little over 2 gallens of oil. I called a dealer (mine doesnt know a lot) and they said check the turbo to see if there is oil residue around the out-port to the heads and if so then to change the turbo. So I did that.
In 250 Km or 150 miles it consumed another 2 quarts. I have been checking at every few hours to make sure that the engine will make it home.
When I first bought the truck there was gases coming out of the Dip stick when it was pulled and there was also the same from the oil cap when removed of the the dealership said this was normal when I asked them. One person told me that there was blow by.
It seems to have great power and seems to idle smooth for considering it is a diesel.
Could this problem be rings or valve guides? Is there a way to do a compression check on the diesel ?
This is my first diesel and am not very familar with them .. I do have not bad knowledge of gas jobbies.
It is not likely to be the valve guides. There is a special adapter that fits into the glow plug holes to check compression with. Remember to disconnect the 42 pin engine harness connector while doing a compression check so the engine doesn't start during the check. How long have you had this truck? Has it always used this much oil or just when towing? How many miles are on it? It sounds like the rings are stuck to me.
There are 360,000 KM about 220,000 miles or so on it ... I have only had this truck for 6 days now. As far as towing goes it has been used for towing in the passed how much I dont know as it came from a Herterite Colony.
Stuck rings ? means that they are not moving around the piston or ?
