Make an air tank out of a gas grille bottle?

I just found out I can't get my old gas grille bottles filled anymore because they now require a special valve on them to prevent overfill. Went to a couple places and they all told me the same thing. Need new tanks, and the old ones can't be retrofitted with the new valve. Anybody know if these tanks can be filled for air tanks? Seem like they'd be strong enough, my compressor only goes up to 125 PSI.

I am sure if you could do it if you wanted, but I think it would be better to go to some place that does bottle exchange and just swap then out for new ones.

I have used propane tanks for air tanks many times. They work really well. Of course, now you can buy "air tanks" at Walmart for fairly cheap.

The work may be more than it is worth. Like Odie780 said, you can just exchange them for the 'new model' with the Overfill Protection Device (OPD).

I wouldn't recomend it. You would have to vent or purge very well before you could use them safely. And in doing so you would have very nice bomb. Propane and air under pressure, together YIKES. Like the other guys say exchange or just an air tank from WalMart. Even those are only good for 5 years or so before they want you to throw them away.
Just my 2 cents worth.

In Alberta (or Canada) they are allowed to go 10 years before re-valving the bottle.I did it on my trailer bottles because they are 40 pounders. After retro-fitting the bottles & filling them plus a 20lb BBQ bottle the total came to $52.00.
That was 4 years ago.

Now about your question.

Yes they can be used but why, I can buy a Air Pig(as they are called) complete with air gauge, hose, chuck for $27.00
It just isn't worth the time or effort.
Because of possible weak spots in the bottle developing after time,
They are better off melting them down to make new bottles anyway.

Who told you you can't retro fit the tank?
I was getting a tank filled last year from a local distributer, and I asked about a retro fit, I was told it was about $20 for a new valve and to have the tank re-inspected.

I just did the exchange tank thing and got one with the OPD valve already attached. Solved my problem.

A new valve CAN be put in the old bottle. All they do is unscrew the old one and screw in the new one with the float.. $15.00 installed. Find a trailer park refill station that knows what they're doing.

Kits for the conversion to an air bottle are available from http://www.jcwhitney.com

94van: Can you give us a little more detail as to where in jcwhitney's website we can find the conversion kit?

If anyone is thinking about using one of these things for portable air in their truck there is a much better/safer way. Go to your local junk yard and see if they have any medium or large trucks you can rob the air tanks from. You will get a very strong DOT approved 2.5 gallon tank that will fit nicely under your truck against the frame rail. I use this setup with a QuickAir2 compressor, it was cheaper than buying their air tank. I picked up two tanks for 20 bucks!

You'll probably have to get their catalog, the web site doesn't list all their stuff. I think you can order it from the site.

They show the conversion kit for $7.99. You'd probably be better off getting a dedicated air tank, cause you'll have about a $5-6 s/h charge on top of that.

For about $20-$22, you can buy an air tank on sale at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Ames or a lot of places.

94van: I have one of those old propane tanks sitting around. A bubble is cheaper and probably safer, like you mentioned. I appreciate the opinions!

This is against all the rules but I plan on putting my old tanks up for target practice. This, of course is not recommended by sane people but who said I was sane.

Around a hundred yards should be about right.

ultramagdan:

Expensive targets. It's about $15 each for the new valves to update the tanks. New tanks probably run about $35 each?
