The rear end of my truck sits at least couple of inches lower then the front. It didn't bother me, but for the first time since I owned the truck (2 years) my wife rode in the back and said it's bumpy as hell. The shocks in the rear are Monroes with ~30K miles on them, but when they were brand new the truck was sagging too. I noticed few other explorers with the same problem. I thought of putting adjustable air shocks in the back, but I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do. Any suggestions?
P.S. As far as I know the truck never hauled anything super heavy
First thing... make sure it is actually sagging.... the wheel wells on the rear are slightly smaller then the front giving it the appearance of sagging. Easiest thing to do would be to set the truck on level ground and measure the distance from the ground to the running board... if equiped.. or you can use the trim on the door. If things are trully out of level, then it either the leaf springs or the shocks.... most likely the springs.
OK, checked it yesterday. I measured from the ground to the running board, close to the wheel well. Both front and rear are ~11" from the ground. Could someone verify if that's what its suppose to be? It's an eddie bauer with stock running boards and rims.
I had the same situation, I just put Warrior shackle kit from www.tellico4x4.com on my '97 Eddie Bauer. It lifted it just enough to make it look "right". Part number is WAR 153 and it cost about $60.00 with s+h. It was fairly easy to install.
I had already tried air shocks which gave me the right lift, but affected the ride and handling. I left the air shocks on in case I want to tow, but only have the minimum PSI in them to give a "smooth" ride.
Hope this helps.
Yes, they are the same and will bolt right up... you will still have some sag though. Like was said before, the Warrior Shackles are the best way to get rid of the sag completely. Most people get 2" - 1.5" of lift from them and they are just as easy if not easier than the leafs to install. Add a new set of Monroe Reflex or Sensi-Trac shocks to the rear and she will ride great.
Just did my explorer sport, went to the junk yard and pull a set out of a 4 door explorer and they worked fine and cost we 30 bucks. At the u-pull it yard. If you have a sport, trash the mono spring it 3" wide and the 4 doors are 2 1/2" wide but will work with every thing you have. The X is a little stiff, but hey begger can't be choosers. My X went up 3 1/2 "s in the butt. I had to lift the front some so it looked right.
