what was the stock engines for the 1980 - 1986 f150 model year? any fuel injection engines? what about the f250's? I really like this body style, and I am considering one of these trucks for my daily driver. A diesel sounds cool, but I am not sure I want to walk into any traps with the diesel engines and peoples poor ways of maintaining them. How easy is it to smog the engines mentioned above? (not the diesel)
Let's get this straight.
The 302 was the first to go EFI, in mid year 1985, the 300 followed in 1987, and the 351W and 460 followed in mid to late model year 1987.
If you want an 80-86 with an EFI engine, your options are an 85-86 F150, or F250 LD with a 302.
how common are the EFI 302s? are they pretty reliable? General Tinkering is fine, but if the valve covers fall off at 5 mph and fuel injectors lodge themself into the hood when the covers blow off, I don't want to fight with it!
Basically, I want it to be reliable, but not fall apart. I'm not afraid to tinker, and do work on the engine. Are there any serious problems with the engines?
What is the fuel economy of the 302? I do know the 460's are a fuel slurper, but damn good engines. (parents had one in a motor home)
My 86 F150 EFI 302 has been a good truck with no major problems. The way I'm geared I get about 20MPG highway. But lucky to get 13MPG in town. It loves the high speed long trips.
For a good all around Motor that'll last forever look into trucks with the 300 I6
I got an 85 F150 with a Fuel-Injected 302 (5.0 L). It's a great truck. I haven't totally figured out my MPG but I get around 180 miles on a tank of gas. That is the small tank because it is a short box. I am trying to figure out why it's so low but $40 a week isn't too bad for driving Ford POWER!
I'm just looking for a pretty reliable 1986 F150 (hopefully fuel injected) I like the front end, and the way the dash is setup. This captivates my attention the most, so that is what I will probably end up getting. How common place are the EFI 5.0's in a 1986? I don't want a truck that had a 300 I6 Yanked out, and a 5.0 dumped in. Smogging a car is a hassle here, and it will be more of one if I have to spend all my time explaining what happened to the original engine.
Looking for:
1986 F150 or F250
EFI a must, if it was a common engine choice.
Hopefully a longbed.
Easily smogged, no missing smog parts, like smog pumps etc, (a common trick here with the 1970's ford trucks. Always the same story: I know a guy who knows a guy at the corner who can smog it easily, even though all the smog equipment is gone)
Does anyone have any pictures of the dash of a 1985 or 1986 F150 at night? I'm curious what all the idiot lights above the cluster say. it's kinda hard to see them.
The lights from left to right:shift and an arrow-white ( I think) left turn arrow- green, fasten seat belts-red, Hi Beams-blue, Brake-red (if your parking brake is on), Right turn arrow-green, 4x4- green ( my 84 has 4x4 light and its 2wd ) so I think they all do. Hope this helps
