Are there any EFI systems out there for installing on the 351M that I have in my 78' F-250. I have seen aftermarket kits for older chevys but that doesnt do me any good. Thanks in advance, as I am trying to layout a plan of attack for my project.
You could probably find a throttle body EFI, but it would have to be tuned for the 351M. I've seen kits that feature a 1990s Chevy TB and new electronics.
So I would probally be better of putting in a 351W or the 302 HO out of my 90 mustang with EFI? What do you thing? I have a guy at work with a older mercury cougar for sale with a 302 but its not a HO. I could just pick it up and put diffrent heads on it and be better off than this 351 M at the moment. As you may be able to tell I'm tired of Carbs.
So you want to trade out the relatively simple, easily fixed problems of carbs for the myriads of potential problems that EFI offers, problems that the common man can't even begin to diagnose, let alone fix? You're even willing to do an engine swap to accomplish this? Different strokes........
Scroob is correct. There was never any modern engine management system for this series. (Like a knock sensor.) So it strikes me as re-inventing the wheel for minimal, if any, improvement.
Turbo City (Turbocity.com) makes Fuel injection systems for our engines. Basically TBI systems that were used on a lot of GM's cars in the late 80's/early 90's/ A lot of camaro's as well as suburbans. Will cost you about $1,295.00, however you are looking at more power, better reliability, more ability and probably 2-4mpg more. Which will more than make up for the cost in a very short amount of time. I am putting it on my 81. Also these systems are even easier than a carb. I have it on my 88 camaro (or did until I went with the 355 ) One thing I hate about these engines is the lack of options. Its not liek a 350 or a 302 where you have a myriad of performance options.
holley makes a universal kit the commmander 950 edelbrock also has a kit made specifically for that engine (or at least that series i cant remember). i was inquisitive also and found it in their catalog. i don't have it handy, but the cost will floor ya. if money is no object, let me know how it works
Hello James (jstcrzyengh), I live on Vancouver Island and have been considering fuel injection for a few years. Gas up here is now almost a buck a liter ($1.90 US per US gal). I'm very interested in your plans for your 81. I have a '79 F250 Super Cab with the 400 engine. Any thoughts on what you think ight work for me.
Yeah, Holley makes a TBI kit that comes with everything except a manifold. All it needs is a standard square bore intake such as Edelbrock's 2171. Summit has the Commander kit for $1350 and the manifold is about $190. I'm planning on getting a kit for mine.

I have a Holley list 8005 carb on an Edelbrock 2171 on my 400 already. Does anyone out there have any experience with either the Holley or Edelbrock TBI conversion?
there is a newer issue of one of the bigger four wheel mags that has an article on the edelbrock kit install i haven't looked thru it yet, but it might be good for pics or tips.
While EFI has many advantages over carbs, performance is not one of them. They will certainly improve gas mileage, and overcome some driveability problems. In these days of high gas prices. conversion to EFI may pay for itself quickly. I am interested in an EFI conversion for a 400, but have no plans to try it, because my miles driven are too low, and I would need an EFI with high CFM not to lose performance.
Danlee:
The issue of finding the right TB, one large enough that is reasonably priced seems to be a stumbling block. I ran across this the other night while researching a TB large enough for the 400 that can be used with the megasquirt.
