The other day i noticed one lug nut was stripped on a front wheel. I want different tires put on. So i figured before i took it in i'd see about getting it off. In the process i find another one stripped coming off. It was tight all the way off. So now i have two messed up studs on the front of my 91 explorer 4x4.
(they both came off, Thanks be for small favors)
Before i go ripping that front end apart to put new studs in I'm wondering if I could use a thread chaser to clean the studs. The nuts deposited material on the lug nuts. I'm thinking if i can clean the deposited material off, may be the studs would be alright. Would a thread chaser clean the studs off?
Never used one before, don't know exactly how they work. If a thread chaser came in two halfs that could be started at the back end of the stud and then like unscrewed that would be awesome. like a die in reverse.
PS. I was kinda surprised when that peice at the end of the hub just came off too. That supposed to do that? I have a book but havent' looked at it yet.
You could run the correct sized die on them for a TEMPORARY get back. BUT! They will be a whole lot easier to strip when the nuts are re-installed. You probably won't be able to torque them down enough without stripping them. An air impact hammer is probably what caused your problem. That means the rest of the studs may be questionable too. If it was mine, I'd get a hand full of new studs and replace them all. If you have to disassemble the axle to do it, hey, those bearings needed repacking anyway, right!!?
to quote myself, "The nuts deposited material on the lug nuts." LOL that made sense didn't it? The nuts deposited material on the studs. I'm gonna have to fire my editor.
Anyway, don't know what caused it. unknowingly, i bought it with this problem. Some of the other nuts feel *soft* when using a breakover bar on them which is what i was using when i found the problem. It's not the studs that are failing, it's the nuts. now thats a scary thought
If the nuts stripped out and left material on the studs all you need is a small flat head and you can peal the treads off the stud. You need to check the studs to make sure the threads weren't damaged. Sometimes the treads will stritch.
