The bed rails on my 88 Ranger are really rusted, by this I mean the area facing the inside of the bed, not the flat area on the top of the truck but rather the vertical part on the inside of the bed. I'd like to strengthen this area without replacing the whole bed, I was thinking of getting some thick angle aluminum and attatching it to the top of the bed to serve as the new edge of the top of the bed. Would this be a decent first welding project(haven't done welding before but looking to get started)? My other option is silicon underneath and a bunch of bolts countersunk into the aluminum.
I covered mine with ABS rail caps. They go on with double stick 3M tape and cover the top and the vertical edge inside. Most suppliers offer a matching trim for the top of the tail gate.
The aluminum angle you mentioned will not weld to the sheet metal in the bed.
Huntsman, I was looking at your gallery, great job....I need a favor, I'm doing my 56' and I need pitures of the rear corner assemble since I got my cab in pieces. I have all the rear corners pieces to rebuild but just can seem to figure out how to put them all together.
I will take some pictures this evening for you, but I'm not 100% sure that the 56 and 55 are going to be the same. Didn't the 56 have the gas tank behind the seat and the gas filler on the right side?
