Bed mounting ideas (frame swap)

I am placing a 66 bed on a 79 frame. The frame gains 3 inches in width as you get closer to the rear end of the frame. My question is how to mount the bed to the new frame. The old holes had a square hole in the bed and the bolt went all the way through the bed, through a piece of plate steel, and then through the frame. If I take a piece of plate steel, drill a hole, weld a bolt inside the hole, and then weld this plate to the cross member on the bottom side of the bed, would this be strong enough to hold the bed in place? Not that its a big deal but this would also keep any bolts from being seen on the top side. With the spacing issues I'm not sure I could get the new holes to fall into one of the existing valleys in the bed.

The bracket that mounts the last two holes was cut and a new wider piece was welded in to compensate for the extra width. All thats needed on that one is a hole drilled out.

Pros or cons welcome.

Not sure what your looking at with yours, but I put my 65 onto a 79 shortbed, I cut the rear of the frame off completely, made a new rear crossmember out of 2x4 channel, and made new frame rails off the crossmember to line up with the bed. Worked out "slick", ( I always wanted to say that)

Just weld new plates in and drill them under the existing holes. The bolts are holding it down, ad weight in the bed and it's holding it down even more.

You will be ok.

I'm about to crawl back under and see where I am. Had to remove almost 2 whole cross members to keep from hitting my in frame gas tank. I have some 14 guage 1 inch square tubing to make some new cross members out of. There is a lowered section on part of the tank I should be able to squeeze tubing between it without any clearance issues. Thanks for the comments about the steal plate. From what I gather you saying keep the existing holes, but weld in a longer piece of flat steel and have 2 holes. One that matches the existing hole through the truck bed, and a second hole that matches the hole through the frame.

Eric, The back part of the frame matches up good with the new pieces I welded in. You got a little fancy with yours. Trying to keep mine real simple. Mine won't be as "slick" as yours, lol.

Wasn't paying attention earlier and hit my head on my battery bracket thats now in the back. Felt something warm running down my head. Decided to take a break for a few minutes while the bleeding stopped. Got one of the girls cool bandaids to cover the new dent in my head, lol. Now I just need to remember when my last tetnus shot was.
