what is the most effective way for one person to bleed the air out my '91's read drum brakes? I just replaced both rear brake cylinders. Thanks in advance.
Or you can do a "gravity bleed". Basically, crack open the bleed valves and let them bleed out. It'll make a mess on the floor, but it works. Takes a while, though. let them flow for 10 minutes, minimum. Make sure you keep the resevior filled. Do not touch the brake pedal while the bleed valves are open.
Thanks, I did a gravity bleed on the front calipers with no problem, but for some reason nothing comes out the rear brake cyclinders when I have the bleeder valve open.
I found more info on the speed bleeders in the garage forum. My mistake--I should have searched all forums but instead I just searched the brakes forum.
Another thing I do is to take a bottle of brake fluid. Connect a piece of vacuum line to the bleeder nipple and run it into the bottle of brake fluid, and then pump the brakes a few times. You'll feel it when the brakes fill up.
I believe I had problems gravity bleeding the rear drum that had a brake-line blow (in my work's parking lot - in a rainstorm). I believe I just turned the nipple until it came out, then it bled itself. I think I had to clean out nipple orifices, too.
Of course make sure you have your brake-reservoir cap off (don't need suction working against you), and your reservoir filled.
(comically - or not - I just had the rotors cut on my Intrepid two nights ago, tried to throw it all together and drive - forgot to put brake fluid in it, or even check it, and I went and got air in my lines. Gotta go get it ready to bleed tonight.)

Yup, I had the master cylinder cap on. I enlisted the help of a neighbor. Used the vacuum hose into a jar idea so I could see when the old fluid was completely changed out. Thanks for all the great suggestions!
