does anyone have alternator brakets for sale? I need some for a 390. Right now im running a one wire 140 amp chevy alternator, mounted using a modified stock generator bracket from the 390.
Hi! Are you saying your 390 originally had a generator? If so you'll still have a problem even with the alt. brackets 'cause the early blocks don't have the hole for the lower alt. bolt.
The FE alternator brackets are the same ones used with the early small blocks. Both the adjuster and the support bracket are common to the 260-289, early 302 bracket. Alternator spacer is different though. If you still need a set , I've got extra's, $20 for both, and the aluminum spacer too + shipping.
This is what you need to install an alternator on a generator equipped 390. It includes a special rear bracket that bolts into the block to mount the through bolt on the alternator. It also comes in polished stainless for $10.00 more.
Early blocks (came with generator verses later alternator equipped FE's), have a boss that can be tapped for the 3/16 bolt. The poster has a 70's something FE.
Maybe that's all he had at the time when he put it together. And William, it's 3/8ths not 3/16ths. Most Alternator pivot bolts are 7/16ths though so a 3/8ths bolt would require a bushing to take up the slop. I pulled a 67-68 Block out of a 63 Merc, so at this point in time Merc62 could very well have a later block in there.
