My recently pruchased 96 PSD has just over 110K on it. I do not know if it has ever had fuel additives/cleaners used. If I start to use them are there any precautions I should take
Yeah do not spill it on you it stinks really bad. No but read the full additives thread up there in the top three sticky threads. Diesel kleen seems to be the favorite. I like it too!
Make sure you only use fuel additives that contain NO alcohol. This will negate the effect of the fuel/water seperator. I personally like Standyne and have also used Diesel Kleen. I run Standyne Performance Formula at every fill up and Lubricity Formula when I change the fuel filter. I fill the fuel bowl with the additive when I'm changing the filter. The Performance Formula contains a cetane booster, but the Lubricity Formula is desinged to be a cleaner and lubricant. Running additives regularly helps to keep the fuel system clean.
Thanks !! I was mostly concerned that adding an additive, if one had never been used, might cause large amounts of gunk to contaminate the system and take out my fuel pump or other component.

That would be an unhappy event. I've been using Diesel-Kleen. I don't know what the previous owner did, but since I started using it the truck runs a little smoother, and no more black smoke at startup. So the system was obviously a little bit gunky.
One thing about hanging out in this forum, a person could get real paranoid, and see nothing but perils everywhere.
