I was wonderign what all is involved to install a set of regular headders on a 1978 ford f250? My dad already said that years and years ago he had a set on the truck so he already bent the bottom of the inner fenders. Right now i got manufolds on the truck right now. Will I have to cpmpletly get a new exhaust system for the truck since im puttign headers on it? Also What size pipe and mufflers would give it a really loud but DEEP tone to it?
thanks,
EDIT
Well i really wouldn't want to have to drill my frame and everythign more. If id like to keep my truck as simple as possable thas why I thaught about using blocks. Also i would liek to be able to change it back if i ever wanted to.
thanks,
go with a set of hedman headers 2 1/2" pipe and flowmaster 40's to make it loud dump the exhaust at the rear axle without turndowns or just run it out the back with some tips. just an idea for ya
I have a set of stock manifolds on my truck right now with a pretty mcuh stock 351M with a edlbrok intake and a holley 4berrel carb. I was wondering i have a set of headers that are laying around. I was talkign to my dad about puttign them on my truck. he says im wasting my time and it wotn help my truck out any at all. He says it will jsut cause more problems and not help at all. I would liek for you guys to put some inpot who own these trucks and let me know what you all think.
thanks
Jimmy
PS are they worth it or not for on my truck?
EDIT:
oh yeah my truck is a 1978 ford F250 with a 4speed tranny. I am goign to run 33x12.5 tires on it also and i do not need cats on it but will have full exhaust (2 1/2) diameter and i will have a set of mufflers on it.
EDIT #2
in help i ment by horsepower gain and torque gain. (i was wondering if you would notice a difference or not)
thanks again!
I can't say what would happen to your truck but way long ago (1990) I have an Olds Cutlass with a dual exhaust, and then put a set of full lenth headers (some JCW cheapos) on it and I definitly felt a difference. Maybe like 10hp, another thing was a Pro-Flow Edelbrock air cleaner, that made a small difference. One thing I disliked about those headers was the amount of heat that radiated off of them, but if I was going to do it again I would put some header wrap or something to lower the heat a bit. If you don't like them you can always put the old manifolds back on. I think dad is trying to keep you out of trouble.
headrs and exhuast was the first thing i did ot my truck...it was all stock, out of everything i have down it made the biggest improvement in seat of the pants feel.... i f i were to do it again...i would get some nice ones with big thick flanges and have them ceramic coated to cut down on the heat
Full length headers did make a difference on my 79. Bone stock, (except for headers now), I can feel it has some more power to it, but not giant gains in power. I also can't help but cruise around in lower gear to hear the rumble from the duals
headers will always make a difference, the more the modified the engine is the more the headers help. the more air the engine takes in, it has to have a free flowing way to get out, and thats where headers come in, im guessing headers on a stock engine you will gain anywhere from 10-30hp.
All,
For the money.... headers are the best investment! Seriously, you could see a large performance gain. I had huge gains on my 302 and again on my 351M. If they are just "laying around", then just "throw them on". Then you tell us.
Good Luck,
KingFisher
Headers are always a bonus in most application. I disagree with more heat under the hood. Stock manifolds are nothing but heatshinks. Headers cool much more rapidly but still do nothing to get heat out of the engine compartment. But IMO you should never use header wrap. Depending are where you live, you can rot a pair in a year. If your headers fit and the flanges are not warped get them ceramic coated. Not only will they look better and last longer but you will greatly reduce the heat in the engine compartment.
