Question headers?

I have a 2002 F-250 with a 5.4 auto. I want to get a set of headers for it. How hard are they to install? I'm also thinking about a computer tuner but would I have to reprogram it to get the most out of the headers. I also have a K&N fipk and cat back exhaust already on my truck.

Good Question

I am also looking to install headers on my 1990 Full size Bronco. Do you know where to get them at a reasonable price and which should I look for?

I believe the 5.4 headers can be a pain to install, because the engine sits further back in the engine bay versus older F series models. Personally, it is worth it to me to have someone else install them! TXhottie, check the bronco forum, you have a response over there. I have headers on my 96 bronco, and I do plan on running a Diablo chip in the future (money is pretty tight right now).

for the headers on a new truck you have to install the through the wheel wells on the trucks, you got a direct shot at them therough there. you can get on gibsonexhaust.com and they have inbstructions on there on how to install the headers. as for what brand of headers i would get either JBA or Gibson. they seem to be the better quality and the most popular. and if you are willing to spend the big bucks around $1,300 or more you can get a set of equal length headers and crossover pipe with high flow cats and it comes out to a factory style fitting so aftermarket cat back exhuast systems will bolt up. you can get that at summit racing or performace products.

If you get long tube headers you need to use MIL eliminators or get a custom tuned chip. If you don't, the chip or tuner will give a check engine light.

If you go with the gibsons they are a relitivly easy install. However, their instructions tell you to remove the starter, what they don't tell you is that once the headers are on there, there is no way to get the rear bolts in. Also the bottom pipe coming out has almost no clearance from the motor mounts so everytime you torque hard on the engine they are going to hit and possibly cause problems in the future (haven't had problems yet so might be ok). Should you choose the Gibsons feel free to email me questions. I see you are also a new user so to email me, click on the profile button under my posting. (I'm assuming that the install on your 5.4 will be similar to my 4.6).

Also, you might want to look into some header gaskets such as the sce-4046 (Summit's part#). These are actually listed for the 4.6 but assuming the heads are infact interchangable, these should work.
