I suppose a rotary lobe blower could be spun by the air itself, since the engine would function as a vacuum pump. But it is still spinning...do you notice if the pulley is still turning on a dragster after the blower belt has flew off? On Road Warrior, the pulley is initially stationary. The case-to-lobe clearances on a rotary lobe blower are by design very tight - I just don't see any air getting past it if it ain't turning.

That is exactly right, and even if it could get air, I would love to see the how those deep dished pistons you have to use on that S.C. would run with no boost.

When they pop a blower belt, the engine instantly turns into a big brake. The inertia of the car is turning the engine, which in turn pulls air through the S.C., causing the S.C. drive gear to turn.
