BEEN FIGHTING A PROBLEM, 1999 powerstroke 160000 miles, the vehicle will start but will only run at about 750 rpm mashing the throttle to the floor really is the only way to keep it running, it will idle after a while but ??????? i looked at the fuel filter and at the bottom of the cannister was a horseshoe shaped piece of wire with 3 foot pads that one leg went down into the slots on the bottom of the cannister . looked out of place but i didnt remove it as it seems to be secured to something in the slot. have no clue, couldnt figure out its function. Ideas anyone?
That thing in the bottom of your fuel filter housing is a fuel heater that comes on when the temprature is below a certain level. Leave it alone.
Do you have any codes stored in your computer? That is the first thing you've got to find out. Is your "check engine" light on? Do you know how hard it is to diagnose a problem from a 2 sentence discription from long distance? Have you removed the fuel filter and tried to run it with the filter removed? If you have, put it back -- it won't run with the filter removed. It sounds to me like you've got a problem.
i havent pulled any codes and no lights are on...i bought the truck the way it is, not running right and got it very cheap but i'm at a loss where to start ,i have a 6.5 GM diesel and have much experience with that one . so i'm starting with basics... the fuel filter is full when you pull the cap and the filter looks normal (doesnt apear to be plugged but i'm replacing as i go) is there a way to check fuel pressure? (at the pump) i'm thinking injector pump ,the truck seems to not be pulling fuel to the engine so that it could pull more rpm?????/ while it is running i checked the airflow at the air cleaner and it is pulling a large volumn of air into the motor, the exhaust pulse is strong also so i'm not looking at the engine itself as the culprit. it is very clackey though if it were a gas engine i'd think the rods were gone but it spins pretty easy with the starter. i'm still digging around ,i looked at both fuse boxes and didnt see anything unusual or burnt fuses....... i've checked underhood connectors but everything seems ok........ any ideas?
The IVS, Idle Validation Switch. On the pedal assembly. If it has gone bad, the PCM will think the truck is at idle all the time.
TPS- Throtle Possition Sensor. Also on the pedal. As soon as you start the press on the throtle, the the IVS will close, and the TPS will tell the PCM how much throtle is being applied.
I do not think that these can be pruchased with out a whole pedal assembly, but you can try!
If any of the things mentioned in post #3 are the culprit you should have codes in the computer and you need to check for those. But fron your discription in your second post it sounds like you are not getting enough fuel (the clacking like rods knocking is what a diesel sounds like when it is running out of fuel). Change the fuel filter first. There is a plastic tip that protrudes from the underside of the top of the filter element that opens a spring loaded valve on top of the stand pipe inside the filter housing. If that tip is broken off it will starve for fuel. Second, you'll need to check your fuel pressure. There is a schrader valve (looks like a tire valve) on the filter housing. Your in-valley fuel pump could be bad (does your truck have the pump in the valley?) If not you've got an electric pump on the frame rail. Check to see if it is running. If not, check if it has power to it (it could either be a bad pump or the fuel pump relay is bad). That should get you started toward the fix.
