So... when will we see twin turbo chargers, one small one on each cylinder bank? :-)
The final drive gearing will be about the same. What the 5 speed automatic will do is get your load moving better (faster with less strain).
Twin turbos would spool up faster but it would also double the cost of turbos. This new variable rate turbo is designed to blow more air at lower engine speeds then back off at higher engine speeds (depending on engine load) eliminating the need for a waste gate and giving the effect of a faster spool up. And, for those of you who like to hear the turbo whine, you're going to love this new engine -- it really sings a song!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Aug-02 AT 10:17 AM (EST)]Joe -- Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't another feature of the 6.0 that it can be produced modular in design? I guess not really modular in the pure sense of the word, but isn't part of the plan to lop off two cylinders and use the same parts for a 6 cyl "mini" diesel for Explorer and F150 applications in 2005? (or 2007)
I think the new engine is going to be great. I don't care much about the HP numbers, I care about the torque. Peak torque is still at a reasonable RPM and a broad enough curve to outpull anything. Unless you are someone who modifies everything on your engine, the 6.0 is going to be great. They do all of the work for you by incorporating more technology into the product.
