I am in the process of rebuilding the 390 in my 1973 F100 Ranger. I bought a Rol Gasket rebuild kit and the head gaskets that come in it only have water ports on one side of each gasket. I went to a local parts house and looked at the Fel-Pro gasket, and it is set up the same way. So is it supposed to only have the one hole or do I have to drill out the other side? If it is only supposed to have one, does the hole go to the front or rear of the engine. PLEASE HELP ME. THANKS.
Thank you too BB. I have a friend that has a 360, and he was telling me that when he rebuilt his, him and his father drilled out the holes on the gasket. That just didn't seem right...why would you have to drill on a brand new gasket...which is the reason I posted the question. Thanks again.
Hmmm...
well I would suggest you have your neighbor and not your friend help you.
The block is cast symmetrically for even heat expansion and the front passage is there to help remove the casting sand.
The direction of water flow is from the front to back, up into the back of the heads. Then it goes forward in the heads to the front of the intake where both sides meet at the thermostat.
Drilling out the gasket would short-circuit the water flow back to the thermostat, not good.
