I guess the real question is the mag hytec worth $290 or should I spend less money on a pan that is 4+ quarts? Where is the better value?? I have a mag-hytec diff cover now

save your money if you dont want to buy a pan. get you a piece of metal and JB weld it over your existing drain hole or just JB your plug in. Drill a hole and buy you a transmission drain bung from an auto store and you have it fixed for about $12

buy a new pan stock or after market dont mess with the old one if you can. I have seen folks patch pans before and it causes nothing but problems. If you feel you have to fix your old one take it off first. By the way nothing beats additional cooling. I do not tow that much but I am hard on my truck. I drive on average of 35000 mi. in the city. I went through 2 Torque Convertors. The Updated factory Heavy Duty (under warranty); put larger cooler on - temps are lower and no problems. good luck.
P.S. that is a nice pan Fire Rooster has....

Jac6,

Thanks for the cmpliment!! I really try to educate myself and shop around for good quality stuff before I jump. Nice to see someone appreciate my choice

Jerrod,

Depending on how heavy you are towing and what grades you are pulling will depend on if you need a tranny cooler or not. As for me I just purchased a 40,000lb Tru-cool max from dieselsite.com, along with a few more goodies. As for me cooler is better I pull a 33 ft fifth wheel and normally while pulling it sits around 165* but this last pull up a long 7% grade it got too 210* which is still ok but too hot for me!!!

Ps. Cookie thanks for the advice on the Tru-cool

So would you go with what farmer phil said, JB the plug in( by the way what is JB???) or just get a new pan?? If the answer is a new pan would you just spend the $220 for the pan like fire rooster or go for $70 more and get the mag-hytec to match the rear diff cover?

Well personally, unless you're having problems with trans heat - I'd probably go with the pan like Fire Rooster has. The pan itself will probably help no matter what brand, so you just gotta decide if the exta $70 is worth the extra couple quarts with the mag-hytec is worth it to you. My $.02

I am not currently having problems with tranny temp, but I figure possibly if I go with the mag-hytec at 8qts vs the other with 3+ qts I might be able to avoid putting on another tranny cooler. Also have a mag-hytec rear diff....thought matching may be nice. Or is the 4-5 extra quarts a mute point once you are at 20 plus quarts of capacity already???

I don't know a whole lot about this but I would imagine that any extra fluid you can get would reduce the temp. SO - with the mag-hytec you could see slightly cooler temps but I couldn't tell you how much lower than say the other pan. An exta 4-5 quarts is like 25% of the system so I think it would be worth it - bigger is better right?!

I am obviously leaning towards the mag-hytec.....jsut want to make sure I am not making a stupid waste of money. Total is like 24 quarts or so with mag-hytec. 21 qts with the other pans. Thinking very much teh same.....that is 25% more fluid! Can't hurt! Hopefully I can avoid a tranny cooler.

The auto trans is supposed to hold 18 quarts stock (according to the manual) so with a +8 Mag-hytec you'd actually be pushing 26 quarts - which is a whole heck of a lot of fluid! I suck at math but you're close to 50% more fluid with the mag pan!! Go for it and let us know how much the temp drops - I'm sure many would like to know those #'s!!
