I have a 61 f100 unibody half ton.did some of the trucks come out with power steering?there is a set up on ebay i am thinking about bidding on that came off of a 64 and he says it will fit 58-64...any help would be appriciated..Thanks..Tom
Tom, recently there have been several articles in various truck mags concerning a power steering conversion for trucks of your vintage. The articles I have seen refer to Toyota boxes and aftermarket columns. Lots of work and money. And this conversion still leaves you with the straight axle and leaf springs. I'd look at an IFS conversion or later model frame swap. IMHO!
Believe me you don't want that system. It is a fulltime power assist system using a slave ram & undervehicle control valve. Hoses hang down & move back & forth as it works. It's a genuine mess, not only to install & adjust, but own, drive, service and maintain.
Those older power-assist slave systems make interstate driving a thrill, but not the enjoyable kind. PSI increases as engine speed does, so they get steering light, feeling like they're tip-toeing or dancing across the pavement. Road feel is virtually non existent. Plus those old slave-ram systems run very high PSI and use a power robbing pump that robs fuel economy too. some even had multiple belt drive set ups! It's ancient technology & works like it.
I hope somebody else with experience with old "Slave-Ram" systems chimes in here. . . . That is not what you're looking for. REALLY. . . .!
