I have a 2004 V10 F350, and if I have not started it for awhile like a week or so, I hear a quick knocking sound right when it starts up. You know when you start the engine it quickly rpm's while it warms up. Right when the engine fires over, I hear that quick knocking sound. It only happens in the morning or after it has sat for a while. could it be because the oil is all down in the pan, or maybe because I should start it more than I do. Just wondering if anybody else has this happening, and it is just a V10 thing. The truck is new, and only has 5,000 miles on it. Let me know what you guys think. Maybe I'm just tripping out.
Sounds like a little piston slappin goin on, I agree with tracman take her in asap and have em look at it, You may want to get an oil analysis done before you drain that oil out. BTW my LS-1 has done the same thing since 2000 miles, hasent caused any problems but I wonder whats going on in the bore wall.
A million post on this....Do a search for piston slap.......almost all V10's have it. Have the dealer document it and dont worry about it.....because there is no cure or fix for it.
I have the same thing. Generally found during extreme cold or long weeks of non-driving. I always considered the cause to be little/no oil due to the long sit.
I think HeavyAssult is right. Try installing a new motorcraft oil filter (an 820S, I believe). I think the anti-drainback valve in yours is allowing the oil to run back into the engine when you shut down. You're hearing valvetrain noises as the system pumps up. I tried a Fram filter once (only once!) with the same result.
I had a 2001 with the v10, and now a 2003 v10 and when I ran a Fram filter and RP oil ( 10-40 I think) I had the same noise, I changed to the ford filter and 5-30 mob1 and it is gone ! I used redline or RP in my Mopar cars and fram filters, but not in my V10s or my 4.6 mustang.
