I am planning on getting an alignment this weekend. Is the stock suspension on these things adjustable, or will I need to have the adjustable bushings installed?
The place that is going to do it says that it is $39.99 if they don't need to install the bushings, and the price varies depending on parts and labor.
To adjust the caster and camber they will probably install a cam kit. The kit is a couple of eccentrics that install behind the upper control arm nuts and bolts. This allows them to adjust the upper control arm in or out as needed.
i just had mine done-the factory uses colored shims. [mine were green] and yes there is a kit that has the eccentric cams that i almost can assure you that you'll have to cough up 80 bucks or so. the person that did mine says these shims are hard to get from ford, plus you don't know what color [which sets the camber/caster] to get until it's put on the machine. who wants to wait for parts to be ordered? you might get lucky if your not the original owner, the previous person may have already had them done. you can see the cams-there about 2" in dia, right behind the big bolts that hold the upper control arm. also hope you upper ball joints aren't worn enough to need replacing. there made with the control arm. so there's another 65 bucks a piece [at o'reilly's]. mine is a 2001 2 x 4. plus i bought 2 new front tires so i spent much more than anticipated. But my doors aren't cracked!!! good luck!!
I just put in a set, in a 99 f-150. You can get the kits from a good parts store, we just happen to get them from Carquest. You will need one kit per-side, thats the drivers side, or the passengers side. You dont need any special tools, just some wrenches. You will need to jack up the truck and remove the tires for accesss, to the bolts. Do one cam adjuster bolt at a time. You will need to have the alignment set afterword. Once you have the kits installed, you will have a fully adjustable front end. Read the instructions on the kits befor you start. You can do it.
