Have you ever had any of your spark plugs blow out on you on your F-150 with the 4.6 or 5.4. Is this problem common or rare. I was looking at a used F-150 I was wondering if I should be worried about this. Did ford solve the problem. Thanks for any replies
Its actually quite a rare event, never heard it happening on a 4.6, but have heard about it on early model 5.4L motors. I believe that in mid 2000 they upgraded the heads to have longer threads, which to my knowledge has solved the problem.
From what I understand, on the earlier 5.4L's its a problem of the plugs working loose, or new plugs were improperly installed by not torqueing them right. It's been reccomended that on the earlier models that you retorque the plugs every 30k, and this seems to work well.
It is really easy to come on to any fourm like this and see some threads about problems that people have, and then automatically assume that it is a problem with every single vehicle on the road. You need to keep in mind that the problems posted here only represent a super-small fraction of very happy buyers, after all Humans aren't perfect and neither are the machines that we make.
What kind of F-150 are you looking to go with? Will you be towing much with it?
I currently have a '03 F150 Supercrew with the 5.4L and I love it, I'd recommend it to anyone. The only thing I'm not quite satisfied with is the mileage, but I'm working on improving it. It's basically a good excuse for me to do mods, so hey, thats great
