synthetic oils

Just curious does anyone use synthetic oils? With 15qts that is probably expensive but just curious.

I will once I get about 5000 miles on it. Synthetic oils is about the best thing you can do for your motor, but if put in to soon, your rings will not seat.

Please never put 15 quarts of oil in a 6.0, you can cause yourself problems with foaming.
Also, check out oilguard at the top of this page, especially if you are determined to run 15 in the system

13.5 is a great number.

hey Tim Lamkin
If you would read the book on your 6.0 and check the fill line
it calls for 15 Quarts of oil

Yes Tim, the specs call for 15. What are you basing your statement on?

I run Mobil Delvac 1 5W40. I originally tried it to reduce cold oil pressure from over 120 lbs to 80 lbs. I felt that the excessive pressure was causing the rear main to leak. It stopped leaking.

The main benefit is a little better mileage and a MUCH quieter engine. It costs $85.00/case of 4 1 gallon plastic bottles. The engine will only hold 14 quarts.

When I change the oil myself(I have twice so far), 14 quarts fills it to the top mark on the dipstick after starting to fill the filter. Why the descrepency? Who knows? Maybe there is an unaccounted quart in the high pressure oil system.

There are also good discussions and lots of information about synthetic oils in the Misc. section under Oil and Lubricants forum. It's always nice to discuss it here also when specifically pertaining to the 6.0 PSD.

How are you guys using Delvac 1? I only see a 5w40 available but the engine manual says to use 15w40. Also it says to use 10w30 for under 30 deg F.

A common misconception. Many new engines come with synthetic or synthetic blend, including our gas powered FORD Super Duty brethren.

I use it to reduce the cold oil pressure. 15W40 makes 120+ pounds (off the gage) of cold oil pressure. I think it is responsible for some of the leaky rear main seals. Mine stopped leaking. Many dealers are recommending 5W30. Do a seach and you will find mucho information on oil in this forum alone.

I agree with tim on the amount, but I run the shell rotella 5w40 synthetic, and the truck runs much better.
