Don't know why anyone who does their own oil changes wouldn't have one of these valves--mine has the nipple to put a hose on and can easily direct oil to a container without a funnel. No drips, no mess.
By the way, I have a 350, not a 340 as I said at first. Surprised no one hung me out to dry on that one.
No flamers here. We try to limit things to technical arguments only.
I appreciate the valve link NiNjADoC. Even a genius like me can't know everything! I ordered the valve this morning. I had seen similar valves but most trucks I've owned before have been slammed so not enough clearance for such gadgets.
The .95 from the HP reservoir is not included in the 15 quarts. Same thing with the 7.3 from 1999+. They listed the refill capacity at 15 quarts knowing you wouldn't drain the HP res. Some guys do it on the 7.3 which is why I was wondering if it was practical. So, your actual oil capacity is supposed to be 15.95 quarts, but the refill capacity is supposed to be 15 quarts. That's why I brought up the issue about only being able to drain 13.5. Therefore, if you're really running 15.95 quarts you're leaving almost 2.5 quarts in the engine at oil changes.
I can't explain the discrepancy. I only know that a 14 Qt. fresh oil change with filter puts the oil slightly over the full mark on the dipstick on my truck.
The quick drain valve would probably be a good item for some but I use my truck offroad hunting and such. I don't want to take the chance of having the thing knocked of in the middle of nowhere. Besides, I really don't mind a little bit of oil on my hands to get a regular inspection of the magnet on the drain plug.

What happens if someone did not really like you and drained out 10 quarts?
Seems very easy to me....
There I go not thinking very much of the human race.
Is there a way to lock it, guess drill .060 hole and safety wire it
Would not be hard.
