Not a normal conversation

Not something you talk about every day but has anyone ever had a Hernia? I went to a surgen yesterday and he said I have not one but two of em. I go for surgery May 6th and I am kind of nervous. I have never had any kind of surgery before. Anyone had this surgery maybe can tell what to expect??

its not that bad. all you did was pull a muscle and some of your innards are out of the "pcket" they're supposed to be(inside your abdominal cavity) imagine a pizza pop, when the filling gets squeezed out. the doc is just going to push the guts back in and sew you up. a little graphic but you get the point. good luck!!!

A herniation of muscle is just a hole in it? When it happens in the abdomen, your intestine can slip into the hole. They just sew the hole up, after slicing you to get at it. I think you may be more prone to them after having one (or two). If you have ANY doubts or questions, write them down so you don't forget and ask the doctor before the operation. Good luck.

The surgen told me that they have this new stuff that is mesh. It is kinda like a tire patch, but made out of some kinda mesh. It felt and look like sheet rock tape. It has two sides to it and is held together in the middle. He said he would poke one side in the hole and sew the other side to the outside.

I had a hernia a couple years ago. Actually, had it for quite a while and finally got it fixed a couple years ago. The mesh system has been used in Europe for years. From what I researched it works great, quick procedure and recovery time is a day or two. Low rejection rate, but it does happen. If it does ever pull out again, normal surgery is the fix, they can't re-mesh.

I had the regular surgery, because the mesh wasn't an option in the US at the time and I didn't feel like flying to England, (although they did have a nice vacation package - fly over, couple days of sightseeing, surgery day, rest day, couple more days of sightseeing, then fly home. Something like six grand - airfare and lodging included! No kidding.) With the normal, they have to pull the lining and kind of fold it - it stretches things - and you feel it! The mesh is like a patch and you aren't doubled over for days.

The procedure I had was like fixing a hole in your pants. I hate pain medication so took asprine. Needed help the day after and had to take it slow for about 5 days. They say it takes 6 weeks to recover, but I was doing light work (for a construction guy) in a couple weeks.

I'd go for the mesh if it's an option, try a google search.

I had a hernia repaired with mesh in 1999. Hurt like heck for a day or two, but I have this thing about taking pain pills, so I just put up with it. Pretty much fully recovered in three weeks.

I knew I had a hernia for a couple of years before I saw a doctor about it. I put it off because I didn't want to have surgery. That was really stupid. As I found out from the doctor, I could have died if the muscle wall had 'strangled' the part of the intestine that was protruding through it.

Get it done.

I had on repaired in 98 and they used the mesh. I had told my doctor about it in 96 and they couldn't find anything.
Fineally after hearing me complain for about 2 years he sent me to a specialiest for something else, that is when I got something done.
I was in the hospital for 2 days and out of work for 6 weeks.

My dad has had two.. one on each side. The first one he got he was in high school or college. The second one came about 40 years later. Apparently it's a pretty routine thing to operate on. From what I've heard it's best to get it done sooner after diagnosis than later.

How do you know when you get a hernia? Is it like popping a hamstring --you know it the second it happens or a gradual thing?

I think mine happened suddenly, but it took me a while to figure out what was going on. I realized what it was when I felt a searing pain in my groin when I coughed and noticed a bulge in my lower left abdomen. I eventually perfected a technique of slightly raising my leg and bending a little at the waist as I coughed to prevent the pain. By then, I had do doubts that I had a hernia. As I mentioned in a previous post, I dealt with this for about two years before it got so bad I went to a doctor. I should have had it fixed right away.
