turbo boost

What is everyone getting for turbo boost?I am getting about 16-17 psi max, I have never gone over that.Is this a factory preset level and can it be changed on a stock engine without any problems?HAs anyone raised the turbo boost and did they like it and how much was it raised? Thanks Nick

I have no idea what truck you have, mainly year. With my truck and my chip i get 20-21 PSI full thorttle. I would be interested to hear what everyone else gets too!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Aug-02 AT 04:24 PM (EST)]I have a 2002 psd f250. Where did you get your boost source from?I tapped off a hose that runs across the top of the engine to a black box, inside the wire loom had a hose that I tapped off of.I was thinking of getting the hyperprogrammer, does that raise boost at all? I might wait though cause I will be modifing in a few years but I want more power now.DId you loose any low end torque with the 5' exhaust and downpipe?

Goalie:
You can increase the boost all you want but unless you give it more fuel at the same time, you haven't accomplished anything. The easiest way to increase your boost is unplug the waste gate hose on the turbo (red plastic hose that looks like a vacuum hose) but unless you change the fuel mapping, all you're doing is blowing more air without creating any more power.

I can hit between 30 and 32 psi with a stock turbo on a 1995. On the 99+ trucks you will need to eliminate the wastegate (as previously stated), but if you start hitting in the mid twenties you will set a check engine light because the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor (the sensor that will increase your fuel amount as it measures more boost) will think you are over-boosting and will start restricting the fuel amount to limit the overall boost. You can fool the MAP sensor by installing a boost blow-off valve as the last item (after your boost gauge) in the hose leading to the MAP sensor (the little black box). If you restrict boost and blow off excess going to the MAP, it won't resrict fueling and you will be able to exceed the 25 psi check engine light and continue to build as much as your intake, exhaust, and fuel requirements will allow you to.

You are wasting your time. You can turn the boost up all you want and all you are doing is blowing more air. If you give it more fuel, which will produce more power, you'll get more boost automatically, without having to "do" anything to the turbo. I've had these engines running on the dyno and pulled the red hose off at peak horse power and it gives you an extra 3 PSI of boost immeadiatly, but doesn't do a thing for horse power. You need more fuel if you want more horse power.

The highest PSI i have seen on my truck was 20 in the dead of the Chicago winter. Cold air is good air..........

The Diesel Dude -- My mistake, it is true that blowing more air will not increase hp or tq with out additional fuel added. It was my mistake for not being more specific. Since the PSD will increase the volume of fuel according to the boost pressures, by increasing the efficiency of the turbo (and boost pressures) you can experience more fueling up to the mid twenties, when the max fuel requirment is met. By adding free flowing exhaust and intake components you can also see earlier boost pressures which can fuel at an earlier point. You will usually not exceed the mid twenty mark without adding fuel, be it in the form of staged injectors, propane, or etc.

The upside is that once you are able to flow more volume of air you can add more fuel for more hp and tq .

One thing flowing more air will do that has nothing to do with hp and tq figures is lower your egt. If you are pulling a heavy load and are having a bit of an egt problem, spooling the turbo will increase flow which will lower egt.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Sep-02 AT 03:50 PM (EST)]Dale I -- where can I find a boost blow off valve? If I unplug the waste gate hose on the turbo, should both hose and pipe be plugged? I am trying to get more boost to cool my EGT's. any other suggestions?

one of the main things I have seen with running without the wastegate , even on a stock truck , is the extra boost will lower the egts. also helps to keep from loosing boost when the trans shifts
