Just wondering if anyone else has had trouble with the stupid throttle bracket on these trucks. I have a 360. The bracket is broken and Ford no longer makes them. Anyone used a universal type?
When I changed out my 240 for a 360 last summer I fabricated a throttle linkage to go from the firewall to the carb. The original system had way more complexity than seemed to be necessary. At least the system I made only took an hour or so.
I did the same thing, instead of going from the pedal rod to the thing which reverses the push/pull action and then to the carb, I went directly to the carb but moved it from the bottom to the top so the action works correctly. Very easy to push the pedal now, with much less that can go wrong.
Does anybody have any idea why Ford went to the trouble to put in all the extra doo-dads and cranks when a straight linkage from the pedal to the carb seems to work better and be less complex. It dosn't make sense for them to add unecessary stuff but I can't come up with a reason for any of that extra linkage.
I think that part of the problem was that it stressed the throttle shaft when placed on the top (hooked directly up to the pedal shaft). When hooked to the bottom with a spring, the throttle is moved and the spring offsets the forces on the throttle shaft.
That makes sense. By balancing the forces it probably produces less wear on the shaft and housing. All of the extra stuff was long gone on my truck anyway. When I did an engine swap for a neighbor who's truck had not been violated by a mutant I realized what should have been there on my truck. I may actually try to fab up the missing stuff on my truck now.
That is essentially what I did for my F100 also. It does make sense to unload the throttle shaft if you can. Since I now have a model of what all the extra stuff looks like I may try to do it the Ford way. And then again maybe not.
i used a lokar pedal and cable set-up. its really smooth and works great, not to mention easy to install. dont know the cost though, my buddy works at lokar and gave me them from the demo models. cool huh?
Thanks for the replies. I will probably just rig up something rather than pay for one of the 3 remaining ones in dealer stock. The local parts guy figured they would charge a ton because they are a discontinued part. If anyone wants the numbers to the dealerships that have one I can give you it or you can ask the parts guy in your area to look it up.
