D.O.T. required on all vehicles over a certain width (I THINK it is 80" but may be 88"). Dually trucks are wide enough fender to fender to require them, as are Humvees. Single rear wheel trucks do not require them but many folks put them on because they look good. Has to do with identifying wide vehicles.
To add to what Dave siad, if you are pulling a trailer that is wider than a certain width (the same width requirement Dave talked about), and the trailer does not have front marker lights on it, the ones on the roof of the truck satisfy the requirement. This is also true for trucks with service bodies or campers that are wider than the requirement.
I have wanted to add some to my F350 but really cringe at the idea of drilling holes in the roof... so I'm thinking of making a gutter-mount light bar and putting 5 amber lights on the front surface of the square tube I would use as the light bar. If I put it way up front on my crew cab, it should still clear the camper overcab, I think. That's one of those 'whenever I get around to it' projects...
i am in Cameron Park. i believe the area you're talking about is called "Apple Hill". we go there several times a year for fruits and veggies and christmas trees in december. Cameron Park is west of camino, about 10 to 15 miles west on hwy 50. My surrounding cities are Shingle Springs and Rescue. We moved up here 2 years ago and i'm loving it. I'm above the smog and just below the snow. There used to be a place called "Sam's Town" just off the Cameron Park exit on hwy 50. it was a great place to stop for travelers on the way to tahoe or reno. it had many small shops and looked like an old western town. if you have ever driven to your grandfathers, i'm sure you have seen it. but alas, all good things must come to an end, it was shut down several years ago and has been replaced with a large grocery store and shopping center.
