Slightly more power, a lot more noise. It really depends on your taste, but I didn't like the sound of mine without a muffler. I also have a downpipe, a gutted EBPV, and a 4" system, so there isn't much restriction left, and the flutter from the turbo was unacceptable to me. Now, I've added a 40" long Donaldson muffler, and it's a whole lot better.
Some guys love the sound of straight pipes, though.
If you remove the cat, you'll gain more power, and the sound won't be offensive. That was my first step, and it made a lot more difference than removing the muffler.
I did the straight pipe thing for awhile - but didn't like the "turbo flutter" - so now i have a flowmaster big block muffler. Plans are calling for a Hypermax 5'' system with muffler - to lower my EGT's.
i was fishing because i saw a dyno test navistar ran on a stock 2002 f250. they were useing a chassis dyno.
ran it first on the stock set up. 280hp 18lb boost
took the muffler off. 250hp 16lb boost
was told the reduced back pressure of no muffler caused this. i thought it was interesting being around here there are alot of guys that the day they get their new powerstroke they cut the muffler off. so in stock form it looks like all you do is make more noise.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Sep-02 AT 00:25 AM (EST)]you sure about that? the turbo gives the motor all the backpressure it needs, no backpressure after the muffler enables the turbo to spool up quicker, and higher, thus more power is freed up, and lower egt's, i noticed a small increase when i removed my muffler to put on my banks exhaust
go to ford-diesel.com and ask this question and see what ya get, the response will be alot better
I run the hypermax 5 inch exhaust and no muffler, my buddy runs it with a muffler and he thinks my truck is faster, we have not raced yet though, we will save that for the drag strip.

I own a True Blue F-350 PSD Crew, LB, SRW. I recently removed the muffler primarily to lower EGT's until I decide what exhaust to go with. The turbo wistle is cool, but the turbo flutter noise is not as desirable. A few friends said it sounds like a chopper. My wife said it sounds like a jack hammer (she hates the new sound).
I haven't heard the open system with duals, but I'm assumming it will be very similar. I may attempt the dual set up with no muffler, if I don't like it I will add a muffler with very little restriction.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Oct-02 AT 04:40 PM (EST)]I purchased a 2000 F-350 7.3. It does not have anything at all in the exhaust just pipe from the turbo back to the tip. No muffler no nothing just pipe. I have this noise like a high pitched clanking.
Turbo flutter? Is that what I am hearing? Will adding a muffler stop this noise?
With out actually hearing your specific noise, I can only say it sounds like turbo flutter. If you are really concerned, you should stop by your local dealer or have someone with powerstrke experience take a listen.
I betcha that noise is the Turbo "Flutter" or "Chatter" . I recently put a exhaust cut-out on the truck , so i can basically run a full open exhaust whaen i choose too. With the cutout open , the turbo spools up much faster , and the EGT's are almost cut in half. Yhe only downside is the flutter , which is made even louder becasue it is right under the truck. I think the Hypermax 5'' exhaust WITH a muffler is the way to go...
I just (today) had my muffler ( had no cat to start with ) taken off and a Dynomax superflow (straight thru like a glass pack) with a 4" in and outlet installed in its place... I like the sound.but mainly I did this to help with EGT's.. im not hearing any clacking or clinging.. just a real deep throaty sound.. I like it so far... and with having them use the 4" on the stock 3.5" pipe (welded ) I can re-use the same muffler if i upgrade to a 4" pipe..
