Short of the "major" investment in a turbo kit, what, if any, "little" things can be done to "tweek" the 7.3 IDI??

What about "tweeking" the shifting on the E4OD tranny??

Inquiring minds need to know??

High flow are filter setup, I have a AFE "Big Sucker" intake and i noticed a major differnence , especially when the temp got under 30 in the cold , Chicago winters. As far as other things , Downpipe , Big exhaust , etc...

The fact of the matter is, any modification you make will help a little, but none will be more impressive or give you a better return for your investment than a turbo.
Chips, bigger exhaust, ram air intake, (not too sure about this one) all help a little, but a turbo, especially on a diesel engine is a must. Plus, it’s a major resale point.

It is a simple matter of physics, if you want more power from an internal combustion engine, you have to cram more air and fuel into it. Only a turbo charger or super charger can do this.

Take my advice, save your money, and buy an aftermarket turbo kit. You will not be disappointed. Besides, it gives you something to look forward too. Just think, by next Spring you could be driving an entirely different truck.

You are correct a turbo is a lot of money, been there done that.

If you remove your air cleaner lid you will find a "Soup Bowl" it's the large restriction in attached to the lid, Cut that off. It allows more air to flow into the engine, I did this and it made a samll increase, not much but helped slightly. Plus this mod allows you to remove the lid without having to pull the enite assembly off just to check the air cleaner. Then while you are in that area, replace the air filter with a K&N, it makes a difference.

Next step is to plumb in cold air from outside the truck, the stock air intake snorkle is restrictive, you can check out a very nice home-made set up on this webpage. http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/ Don (Ziggster) has done alot with increasing the ponies out of an IDI without going to a turbo. He has some pretty good ideas that actually work detailed on his webpage.

Then open up the exhaust, larger pipe front to rear makes a difference, if you run straight pipe it makes a difference, but the noise level was too much for wife's (management) tastes.

After you open up the intake (soup bowl) and exhaust you can turn the injector pump fuel rate up. Don has a procedure on his site for this, but a little warning, add an EGT (pyro) gauge first so that you don't over do it and melt the pistons down. These mods will wake the truck up.

But again a turbo is the best money spent for power. I made the jump and was flat amazed at the power level increase, but you are correct it's a lot of money. Even my wife said we should have spend the money on the turbo long before. I actually think that she really did not care, but was just tired of me complaining every time I would tow the boat up a hill. but it worked it out...
