My grandpa was tellin me about how sometimes while he was drivin (58' ford truck with a police interceptor engine ) while in a tunnel he would shut the truck off and let the engne build up compression and then start it back up and it would backfire. He said he did it everyonce in a while in a tunnel. I was wonderin if this is bad for the engine or anything like that before I go off and try to be like ole' grandpa.
Ive done it a million times. It's not the healthiest thing in the world, but I've never had any problems.
It actually cleans the motor out a bit.. blows out the carbon and such.
But im sure it does some kind of damage to it
We call it "keying it off"
We used to do it to scare people going down the road. It's a lot of fun
Ya he said that you leave it in drive when you turn it back over, I thought that you had to have it in neutral or park in order for the motor to turn over. How is this?
Ive heard it will blow out the muffler if you do it alot, but I know a guy that drives by our principal every day and makes it backfire and nothing bad has happened. The way ive done it is give it some gas, turn the key off, just Barely touch the gass agin, and restart it.
I actually blew a muffler out while doing this, and not meaning to. I was rolling down a hill out in a pasture going about 5 mph and letting the engine brake while in granny lo. Anyhow, I noticed that the radio and guages were not working, because the ign. switch could get stuck too far forward when starting. I turned the key slightly too far and shut off the motor, and I quickly turned the engine back on, only to hear a loud pop. I noticed that my pickup was pretty loud on the way home. Sure enough, the muffler was ruined, but my pickup sounded pretty good without it anyway.
Yes, it can blow out mufflers, failed to mention that.
It will, however, not blow out a flowmaster... as Ive tried and tried
But the motor will turn over in gear as long as it was rolling at a decent speed before hand... Its coasting, still pumping gas, just no spark. when you turn the key back on, it ignites the gas... causing the explosion
This only works on vehicles with mechanical fuel pumps and a carbeurator
Ahh thanks Andy. I have a glasspak...does that make a diff in whether or not it will blow? If it does well itll just be louder but I am wonderin if there is more of a chance that a muffler will blow or a glasspak will. I think ill try this tomorrow as Im drivin through the road that runs b/t our school and the parkin lots, where everyone waits for parents or other rides lol.
If you have the "tube style" glasspacks... Im not sure if they'll blow, but Im sure they will. As for the square type glasspack/turbos/etc... they'll blow in a minute.
On my 84 Ford works AWESOME. Lol (BTW this works best with a standard truck/car) Cruz along at 80 km, turn off ignition, leave in gear. roll till u get to about 70, turn ignition to run again... lmao BANG! I completly blew a muffler out doing this! My buddy has it at his house... lol it was beat! And loud... man oh man... also works with no muffler (straight pipes) I was told it will wreck your exhaust manifolds too, not sure on that one. Cool to do, but will wreck your exhaust if you do it excessivly... lol have fun!
Ya he said that you leave it in drive when you turn it back over, I thought that you had to have it in neutral or park in order for the motor to turn over. How is this?
You don't turn the key to the Start position. You just turn it to on. The engine will be turning, driven by the rear wheels so by turning on the ignition the engine will start running.
What you are actually doing is pumping air and fuel through the engine, not burning it and letting it collect in the exhaust system (manifolds and pipes). Then you ignite this mixture by starting the truck. Sounds kinda like a PIPE BOMB doesn't it? The explosion can burst the muffler, crack exhaust manifolds or damage exhaust valves. Think about it. You are creating a shock wave in the exhaust system that's going to bang off anything it touches and break the weakest link. Now the only damage I've actually heard of is burst mufflers/pipes. So those components are probably much weaker than the others that I mentioned.
This isn't to say I haven't done it. I just can't get my Ford truck to do it. Had a buick that would sound like a cannon going off.
I did it this mornin while goin down the road that runs b/t the school and the parkin lot, right where everyone is getting dropped off . It was VERY loud, parents stared at me like Im some "hulagan" and this one girl screamed and jumped on her friend hahaha. When I got in class she came up and jumped on me and tried to tackle me cause of it. I dont mind, shes hot lol. It kinda scared me too cause I wasnt expectin it to be that loud
