Idles poorly when warm

My '89 F250 (351) always starts right up on the first try when cold, idles and runs fine. If I drive it for awhile and turn it off to go into a store or something - when I come back out and start it up, it idles like it's running on 2 cylinders. Started happening all of a sudden a couple months ago. I have to give it the gas to keep it running. Sometimes it will kick back up after a minute or so - sometimes not. If it sits a long time - like overnight - it starts right up and runs fine again. I pulled the codes with a cheapie reader and it came back with something about idle speed too low. Well, no s#*%!

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

I had a similar problem with my 95 and a 351. Next time it idles like crap, open the hood while it's stumbling, and see if your canister purge solenoid is dutycycling. You'll feel it if you put your finger on it. I had no codes either. My problem ended up being a gunked up throttle body. It was so gunked up, that it was holding the throttle partially open, and the tps was sending a signal that the engine was off idle to the processor. This in turn, turned on the canister purge system, thereby making the idle too rich, and running like crap. Long story short, I cleaned the throttle body, and all was well.

Hope this helps,
