hey guys. as some of you know i just got done rebuilding my e4od. thank god , but now i need to rebuild a T-5 manual tranny for me and my cousins trail rig. has anyone in here rebuilt a manual tranny?? ive only rebuild autos ...so i was wondering how easy/hard they are to do! it seems like not many people are rebuilding them...and when i was buying my rebuild kit for the e4od they assumed i had an auto (before i told em what tranny i had) like a manual was outta the ?... maybe im loosin my mind here or somethin, but i figure if i can rebuild an e40d i outta be able to tackle a t5! i think it will be a fun project to do before i get outta school for summer
thanks fellas!

...yea i know a moderator may wanna throw this in the tranny section, but id like to try it in here first cuz personally i think this forum is better at tech ?s, plus id like to beef it up for the trail
Tim, all E40D's are auto's, that's why they didn't ask you when you bought your rebuild kit. If you can rebuild an auto tranny you can rebuild a manual with your eyes closed . . . a hundred times less complicated. If you redid an E40D on your own you're a better man than I . . . I won't even attempt to open one of those! Seriously, get the kit and you'll have that T-5 done in a day at the most.

i meant to say that i didnt tell him what tranny i had til after he assumed i had an auto. i just found it odd. hey thanks alot ivan! its always helpful when you have a lot of confidence in yur abilities! and u just boosted my confidence
by the way...what the hell goes wrong in manuals? i know in autos its usually the clutch packs but in manuals its all gear driven. im guessing its the collars that mate with the different drive gears. wear and tear from metal to metal mating and idiots that shift wrong and grind them probly rip those suckers up! so is that right? would u just pull that shaft and put new collars on? i cant think of anything else besides the synchros, but those are inside the collars anyway thanks alot for the help fellas! im ready to crack into this beast

oya...ivan you outta just find a junker to open up! thats what i did with some old chevy trannies(haha obviously junkers!). however the e4od is a bit different than the old 3speeds . but its seriously pretty fun and very interesting! i was nervous about rebuilding that hard of a tranny on my daily driver by myself but it worked out great
Well, AFAIK, the things that wear in a manual are the bearings, bushing, and the synchos. The other things could be the ends of the shift forks too. I don't think most people have to replace the gears or anything.
that makes sense. so i guess u can just pull the synchros from the collars? well i reckon ill find out when i get the kit how about changing the clutch out. is that pretty straight forward? i feel retarded asking, but its something ive never done! i guess it would just be unbolting, changing pressure plate, throw-out bearing, spring, and clutch plate then boltin back up? thanks
clutches are pretty easy but require a good bit of work. Pull everything off, take the flywheel to be resurfaced, cause it you don't, it'll grab when you put it back together. replace the pilot bearing in the back of the crank (I'd probably replace the rear main if it is a one piece seal). Bolt the flywheel back on, stick the clutch alignment tool through the clutch plate then into the pilot bearing to hold the plate up, bolt the pressure plate up, make sure you torque them down to the right torque spec, replace the throw out bearing on the clutch fork, pull the alignment tool and bolt the bellhousing up, then bolt in the tranny.. Pretty simple, just takes a lot of work.
well, i was sittin around in my garage today lookin at my t-5 (i havnt gone and bought the rebuild kit yet!) and i got an awesome idea! what if i rebuilt trannies and sold them for some profit ive gotten to know the old 3speeds like the back of my hand! and ive done the monsterous e4od! and im sure ill be able to tackle these manual trannies. what yall think about this idea? my buddy wants the manual tranny in his ranger rebuilt so i was thinkin that would be one i could do. and then i was wondrin if i could maybe rebuild some 3speeds or some manual trannies and sell em on ebay? is this a good idea or no? and if so how much u think i could make if i sold them locally or on ebay? thanks fellas!
hey thanks bremen youve been a big help! sounds pretty easy! my buddy with the ranger needs a new clutch real bad too! haha another project i can do for em to make some $$! plus i got a bad clutch in our trail rig im gonna have to check on this ebay thing. ive never sold anything on there.
