The claim "fastest computer in the world" comes from synthetic benchmarking of the system. Theoretically the x86 processor that is in it can move more data then any other. However, in real life that doesn't work out right. I've generally found that a G4 will equal the speed relatively 1.5 its pc competition ie a 400Mhz G4 will operate about the same as a 600Mhz AMD/Intel chip.
In real life issues....your PC running XP will work just fine. As long as its 1.5Ghz, 512MB DDRRAM, has a 64MB Graphics card and an Audigy...you're set for a while still.
I've got 4 computers in my household - one is mine. I have the sole PC. 2.1ghz AMD Athlon XP, 512MB 400Mhz DDR, KT600 Nbridge, GF3 Ti 500 64MB, and an Audigy..it rocks. However..my bios is fubar and Linux doens't like it for some reason.
We then have three Apples - my uncle is a fanatic. I"m typing on a 400Mhz G4 Cube with 1024MB PC100 RAM - worthless upgrade to me. It's a relative pud.
Then we have a pair of G4 Notebooks. 1ghz I believe, 512MB RAM, CDRW, the works.
Another thing - Apple Airports suck. My computer has never cooperated with the thing..it sucks...
Windows copied Mac! Now, Windows is running all the way to the bank! Kinda sucks if you think about it. I use a Dell and love it though, but my brother has a Powerbook. The Mac's programs are crazy for graffics and ease of creating dvds, photos and stuff. He also bought the new Ipod 40GB that thing is sweet!
I've owned one MAC, with system 7 unknown cpu, and unknown hard drive space.
Once i got used to that "clunky" (to me anyway) Single button mouse, the thing was great, i loved it.
A few years pass and now i'm on a PC. Is it better? I can't really tell the difference, i know how to use both of them equally well...and would be familiar with both.
As for OS choices on the PC platform, i'm all for Linux, but i also use Windows 2k Pro for those times i have to be able to do things that linux cannot, or if i don't feel like hunting up a software package. (Mainly because my linux flavor is slackware, and it doesn't have the greatest package selection!)
Though my one secret fantasy is to see Apple port OS X to x86 or PC hardware and run with it. I'd pay whatever they asked for it, just to have it on my desktop without the expense of the apple hardware.
I build my own computers from scratch and I see a MAC like an import car. I can spend 3000 on a pc and get a screeming fast comp. Or I can spend 3000 on a MAC and I get a pretty fast but overall average rig. But if you are more comfortable with MAC, great. I mean, it's just a computer. I build my own just because I get more for my money. I wouldn't know where to start with a MAC. Example, my comp-
2.66Ghz P4-Overclocked to 3.02Ghz
60 MB HD
Radeon 9600Pro Overclocked
Sound Blaster Audigy ZS
5.1 Surround Sound
17 inch monitor
1027 MB pc2100 Ram-Going to upgrade to pc3200
Plus everything else(mouse, keyboard, etc.)
I am on Mac G4 1.25 Ghz , 1.5 GB ram
running OSX Panther... soon I am switching to a G5 Dual with 3 gig Ram
I love it! Would not have it any other way...
For designing, it is so fluid in photoshop... I also use a Wacom tablet
I have been using Mac since the 9500 came out
(I'm not sure how a PhD in mathematics qualifies someone as an operating systems expert. My brother designs state of the art networking chip technology for Texas Instruments but that doesn't mean he knows a thing about operating systems technology --- though he probably has an opinion like the rest of us! )[/QUOTE]
I neglected to give enough information to clarify their opinion. I didn't say they were operating systems experts. Their jobs require the constant use of computers-both Mac and Windows. They are engineers and they not only get into the software end of it but the hardware end also. Like I said it is their opinion based on many years of working with both and they feel that Mac is the better platform.
About a year ago I bought a new apple iBook for my personal use/school work. I loved iTunes - it was so simple and worked seamlessly with the wonderful iPod. And from all the things I've heard, most graphics and digital art/movie makers use apple/Mac. But... when I went to use the apple office programs it came with - I hated it. They just lacked so many features that Microsoft office has. I didn't want to fork out another $500 bucks for Office for the Mac, so I returned it and went with a Sony Vaio - faster and more powerful for a lower price - installed our "family" copy of Office 2000, and I'm happy with it. The Mac was nice, but Windows is just so much more prominent that it's handiness and familiarity makes it the better system for me.
