Engine ID in my '72 F-250

My wife and I bought a '72 F-250. I am not overly familiar with Ford engines, and havent played with Fords for quite a while. I assumed the engine in it was the original 360 (as decoded in the VIN number)... but thought it was odd that someone put goofy (but appear very solid) engine mounts that are welded to the crossmember. A friend told me it looked like a 351M or 400. How can I tell if that is what series of engine I have. I am wanting to do some work on the motor, and of course want to know what Im getting parts for.

I do have pictures of the engine if that helps, that I can email.

Thanks,
Tim

Pictures now in the Gallery

OK, I have both pictures of the outside of my "new" F-250 and of the engine I am trying to identify.... anyone have any ideas for sure. Ive been told its a 351M/400.... does everyone else agree?

Thanks for any input.

check the front of the block just below the heads, and also check on the heads theselves for the heads look down by where the plugs go or under the covers.

Thanks again.... and oops.

Thanks Fritolay for the pointers. I will start looking for some numbers.

I also realized in my post about having pictures, I should have stated they are in the Gallery for those that would like a look... it is the "bronze" colored '72 F-250 with the camper, and the engine gallery is just below it.

Thanks again.

I think cleveland motors were the only one's that had that kind of thermostat housing.

I'd have to second the vote for a Cleveland/Modified motor, based on the thermostat to water pump set up. If it is a 351 Cleveland, it will have a small block bellhousing bolt pattern. If it is a big block bolt pattern, it's the 351/400 Modified family.

The intake looks too wide to be a Cleveland, it's either a Modified or 400.
