last 2 days I have taken my kid to school and when I got back to the farm, I noticed an antifreeze smell around the front end. It doesn't appear I am losing any and there isn't a spot under the truck. waterpump looks good and sealed.
Is your defroster working a little less well? My truck is smelling of antifreeze and fogging up the windows. I'm changing the heater core this weekend.
no, the defroster is workin' fine. Only notice the smell as you walk around the front of the truck. Could the cap be venting off pressure? could it have something to do with the overflow tube? I have yet to see any on the ground and doesn't seem like the level has changed.
if you got a small leak. you might only smell it and not see it. Especial if it is the radiator. they leak when they are hot, the coolant evaporates before dripping on the ground, so you just smell it, can't see it. is your coolant level in the over flow tank going down. I'd just wait till it leaks more, then your sure to tell then
Ok, I did find 3 drips this evening and they evaporated almost instantly. What do you guys suggest? Should I take it somewhere to be checked out, this is a very small leak, without the smell I wouldn't have noticed. Or would you use one of the "Snake Oil" remedies like Bars leaks????
stay away from those " snake oil" remedies. they clog up your cooling system. I tore apart a gasser that had a coolant leak at freeze out plug, prev owners tried to stop it with leak stop. whole back end of engine (170 cdi 6) was clogged with "gunk" ( for lack of better term) I don't know what truck you got, but radiators are expensive. check all your hoses, etc and be sure what it is.
I heard of folks having good luck with those dye tracing kits. what you do is put a UV dye in the coolant. then you search for the leaks with a UV light. heard that it works well from friends, never tried my self.
best of luck,
Nate
Chk the around your end pieces on your radiator, with aluminum cores and plastic ends there are rubber gaskets between them which are pinched to seal by bending tabs. On cold mornings plastic and aluminum contract so the rubber gasket leaks !
I'm only mentioning the experience I had becuase I wouldn't want it to happen to you or anyone else. For about two weeks when I started up in the morning after a couple of minutes I would then hear the warmed up coolant start to flow into the heater core. I was ignorant to what the problem. One day, while driving down the hiway, the thermostat seized up and overheater the engine, blew a head gasket and to out the engine, smelled like antifreeze all over the place. All over a 2 dollar part. This was in my car not my PSD. Does anyone know if this would be of concern in the PSD? I only mention because I believe all internal combustion engines must run head gaskets to allow coolant flow around the heads. Some discussion might help me understand better. I've learned alot from the posts I've read on this board. Alot more than all my years trying to get info out of the dealer!!!
