I have a 1978 F150, and when I put it into reverse there is a pretty good bang. Does anyone know about what I should expect to pay for a rebuilt or new transmission all together?? Or is there anything I can check myself before taking it in? Thanks.........
I would check the driveshaft UJs, especially the one at the rear. If the straps are loose, it will bang when going into reverse. Depending on your shaft, there might be a rubber bushing gone on the slip joint of the shaft that allows the driveshaft assembly to wobble. Might be as simple as a transmission mount. Cheapest thing is to check all the rubber in the truck including radius arm bushings.
Sometimes if the radius arm bushings are gone, it feels like the transmission is slamming when the radius arm hits the bracket because the bushing is worn on the bottom.
As for price of a rebuilt C-6, $800-$1000, depending on quality and warranty.
You might try to remove your drive shaft and put about a small amount of grease (1once)in the yoke and put the dr. shaft back in, it worked for a F-100 , and then your diff.pinion preload may be loose. good luck.and what the other members said.
