fuel injector problem?

I have an 86, E-150, 302L, 170000 miles. I suspect dirty fuel
injectors for the following symptoms.

- sometimes rough idle
- bad fuel mileage
- hesitation on acceleration
- general sluggishness, sometimes

i have in the past 1.5 years done,
- new wires
- new plugs
- new oxygen sensor
- new catalytic converter
- new thermostat
- lots of fuel injector cleaner

Questions:
- How much of a pain is it on this van to get
to the fuel injectors and check them out?
- What exactly is a "carbon treatment", and
would it do any good to get on at a local garage?
- Anything else you would suspect before the injectors?

From what I understand about "carbon treatment" is also called "Top End Cleaning".

You can do a carbon treatment on your engine using SeaFoam Motor Tune-Up. Put 1/3 in the gas tank, 1/3 in the oil crankcase and 1/3 in the intake (usually it is best poured in the brake booster line. To do that start the engine and let it IDLE and pull the brake booster vaccum hose from the brake booster and use a funnel and slowly pour the 1/3 SeaFoam solution until empty and turn off the Engine. Let it set for a couple of hours and start the engine. It's best to start the car at night or drive it at highway speeds at night because a lot of smoke will be coming out of the tailpipe.)

There are two types of cleaning an injector. One is to remove the injector and put this on a machine and they volume test it.
The second one is simple. They just disconnect the fuel intake and fuel return from the fuel rail and they put this device with some fuel/cleaning solution and pressurize it with an air compressor. Start the engine and it will use that fuel/cleaning solution and when the solution is empty, engine stops and they remove that device and reconnect the original fuel inlet and fuel return lines. You might be able to do it yourself by getting this tool with the solution from ebay.

If you haven't already done so, pull the codes and do a compression check. And check for vacuum leaks. I had the 302 in my 89 apart recently, which has about the same miles as yours, and the timing chain was pretty loose. Might look into that.
