I want to know why 57ford has such a big avatar pic, and mine is so small.
Is this a case of what they call "avatar-envy"?

55fordor, Maybe since 57 ford has 500 posts, and you have less than 400, they give you the shaft on the size of your avatar.

Thought that might clear some things up, but just a guess.
DAN.

Sounds more like avatar angst to me.

I vote for the lock nut - flat washer scenario. I see a consensus building and I mean to climb aboard that wagon without delay.

I'm a mechanical engineer, and I design bolted joints from time to time. In my experience, split lock washers are useless. If you want to use a lock washer, use an internal star or external star washer. I prefer to use Loctite. Use #242 (blue) on joints that you will need to undo and #262 (red) on joints that you want to be permanent. The #262 can be undone with the application of heat.

I agree with Fatfords regarding the nylon washers. Over time the material will cold flow, leaving the joint loose.

It is worth the money for stainless hardware. Most hardware sold as stainless is 18-8. If you need better corrosion resistance (to chlorides and sulfates, mainly), specify Type 316. It is better than 18-8 and the costs is about twice.
