I'm a mechanical engineer, and I design bolted joints from time to time. In my experience, split lock washers are useless. If you want to use a lock washer, use an internal star or external star washer. I prefer to use Loctite. Use #242 (blue) on joints that you will need to undo and #262 (red) on joints that you want to be permanent. The #262 can be undone with the application of heat.
I agree with Fatfords regarding the nylon washers. Over time the material will cold flow, leaving the joint loose.
It is worth the money for stainless hardware. Most hardware sold as stainless is 18-8. If you need better corrosion resistance (to chlorides and sulfates, mainly), specify Type 316. It is better than 18-8 and the costs is about twice.
