Windshield trim

Does the chrome trim around the windshield serve any other purpose than decoration? I lost one piece of it(drivers side upper), which leaves the area where the adhesive/weatherstripping is exposed. What holds the trim piece on? I was wondering if I should caulk the exposed area just in case, until I get a chance to find a piece in a junkyard.

Thanks

Serves no purpose other than decoration. It doesn't seal anything and water gets behind there anyway. I have the piece you need if you can't find it locally. Clips hold it on.
