the fuel nozzles (injectors) will begin to make a ticking noise or there may also be a dead miss in a cylinder (we hope not). You can check them by "shorting" them out, one at a time. this is done by loosening the fuel line connection at the top of the nozzle so the fuel leaks around the fitting. It should cause a miss and if it doesnt that may be a sign of a bad nozzle. If you want to get porked, take the whole set to a shop and they will test them and say, "well there is one or two bad and maybe one or two not quite up to 100%. I would replace all of them and i wont even supply the vaseline." It is possible to change the ones that are bad and cause a problem in the engine. You may got down the road and end up changing more but if you dont have the cash for all 8, go for the bad ones first. Use your own common sense. Also, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

Jack,

Like said before you can crack a line loose and listen for a drop in RPM, but this is really only effective when looking for a miss in the engine. If you question your injectors pull them off and take them down to a local injection shop to get them pop and spray tested. Most shops will do this for small fee or free. The ones that charge for testing normally deduct this fee from the replacement cost. You can replace just one injector without problems. If you want some background on the injectors check out this webpage.

http://home.attbi.com/~dieselford/injectors.html

Shimon has explained the mystic behind the injectors pretty well I think.

what were you doing to cause the leak and where is it? If the leak is right on the top of the "injector" there are plastic caps that push down over "O" rings and that usually causes the leak. A slight disturbance in that area will cause the "O" rings to leak. Possibility you broke a nipple on the return cap or the return cap itself. the parts are available from international or from an injection shop. tell them the engine you have and the year, they should be able to accomodate you with the parts.

Ok just looked and it seems to be comming from the lower half of the injector ,is it possible to snap them? It flows out pretty good and does not look like it is in or around the plastic cap. THink it could be the o-rings anyway?
thanks

Jack,
the return line caps can be a pain at times to get seated fully. I use a deep well socket to install mine. This way I can apply more force without taking a chance of breaking the fittings off. You might check to see if they are pushed on fully.

Well it looks like the plastic nipple is leaking,so I just take off the top nut and slide it out and replace? Injector line does not want to move much.
thanks again for your help

You want to be very careful not to cross thread the line nut when reconnecting the injector line to the nozzle. You can use some type of o ring lube to make the plastic cap slide over the o rings. It is correct that the lines dont want to move from their location. Just take your time and be careful. YOU can do it!
