I was considering replacing the stock F250 (diesel) air filter with a K&N or the one advertised in the Ford Service Lounge (ASI something or other developed by the military used on tanks). Has anyone had any experience with the latter one or would the K&N be the best choice?
There are a lot of threads going around about this one. The consensus among many, many PSD owners is that K&N filters don't work well on these trucks. Basically they let too much dirt/dust in due to poor sealing in a stock airbox. Most recommend Ford's AIS filter or the Tymar open element filter. Very good filtration and air flow. They are both very good filters but the Tymar is a lot cheaper. You can get the tymar for around $120 and the AIS for around $250. If you are concerned about warranty issues I would recommend the AIS. Otherwise I would go with the Tymar. Do some searches here on Tymar and you will be busy for days reading up on airfilters.
Good luck
Mike
On a 5.4L auto do you think changing the filter to AIS or Tymar would make a noticable difference in power? I've NEVER modified anything in an engine - not even an air filter - I've got a completely stock f-250, just wondering if I could squeez some more power out of it
People usually change the air filter in a diesel to lower EGT's. As for a 5.4, it would not hurt, but it is a fairly small engine. You would see more of a performance gain with true dual exhaust with some flowmasters or freeflowing muffler.
I looked in jegs and couldnt find much for exhaust systems. When you say true dual exhaust, what does that mean? Two pipes from the two manifolds, or straight into one muffler and then into 2 pipes? Thanks for the info - can ya tell I'm new at this stuff?
